Thingsplex updating variable with new value issue

Hi, I am new to this, and trying to get my head around how to update a variable with a new value based on different home modes, to use this variable later in action nodes instead of branching out all the steps for each home mode. In the attached image I am expecting the given constant to replace the default value of the variable but this is not happening. Only the default value is passed on. So how can I replace it?

Thanks for the guidance Jon. I discovered that there was nothing wrong with the way I tried to assign values to the variables, but rather that when editing them or deleting them they seem to reoccur after a little while as they were originally defined. No matter if I do this from the flow or from the context tab for globals. After doing it many times they finally stay deleted, but could seem that they reappear with originally defined data type if I create a new variable with same name as the old one so I had to define new variables with new names to make it work. I suspect this is a bug, but not sure if it is something that affects others or if there is an issue with memory management/GC on my hub.
